What happened, in summary

Nurguel Dogan was 40, married, and the mother of 2 sons when she described breast cancer diagnosed in 2009. A lump was found during regular early-detection care, and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Her first worry was for her sons, who were 10 and 11. Treatment began with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Her husband took time off work around every chemotherapy cycle so he could care for her and the children, and her 6 siblings made sure she never had to go to chemotherapy or doctor visits alone. Nurguel remembered the 5th chemotherapy session most vividly. After a medication change, she developed severe bone pain, especially in the jaw. A dental splint for the jaw and morphine-based pain treatment helped her recover from that crisis. After chemotherapy, the tumor was removed, and at her request the whole breast was cleared out. A silicone implant was placed immediately, and she was very satisfied with the result. Hormone therapy followed, including Tamoxifen, which was linked with significant weight gain. Losing hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes was difficult, but Nurguel used wigs, scarves, cosmetics, false eyebrows, and false eyelashes to feel like herself. Her faith, family, humor, and determination to stay happy even while ill carried her through treatment.
