What happened, in summary
Luz sought medical care after developing arm and shoulder pain and noticing changes in the shape and size of her breast. With guidance from her doctor, she chose a mastectomy, lymph-node surgery, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Making the decision left her feeling relieved and hopeful. After completing the main course of treatment, Luz described the cancer as being in remission and remained on hormone therapy. Hand-foot syndrome was the side effect that affected her most, and she used prescribed medication to manage it. Treatment also created financial pressure because she could not work and lived in a rural area. Throughout the experience, Luz continued exercising more often, although her eating habits varied. She spent much more time with her parents and her child, while intimacy with her partner decreased somewhat. She hoped to visit the beach with her family, learn an artistic craft, and see her daughter succeed in her career. Although she remained afraid that the cancer might return, she described herself as more optimistic, confident, courageous, and thankful.
