What happened, in summary

Lisa sought evaluation after noticing an area of thickening in her breast. That area proved benign, but a mammogram found a deeper cancer that could not be felt. She believed the cancer might have been missed without the scan because she had not yet received an invitation for her first routine mammogram. The diagnosis brought shock, fear, anger, helplessness, and vulnerability, alongside relief that the cancer had been caught early. Her doctors recommended a lumpectomy, lymphadenectomy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy. Lisa later described the cancer as being in remission and remained on hormone therapy. She experienced lymphedema and menopausal symptoms and used exercise to help manage them. She also reduced alcohol, exercised more, and improved her diet. Fear of dying continued to affect her, but she built a network of people who had also experienced breast cancer. Volunteering with Breast Cancer Now supported her mental health and gave her people to turn to. Lisa encouraged others to use available support rather than facing cancer alone.
