What happened, in summary

Laura's breast cancer journey began after she experienced sharp pain in her right breast and nipple discharge. The diagnosis brought intense uncertainty, including fear of dying and fear of how treatment would affect her. Her care included surgery to remove the tumor and three lymph nodes, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy. She reported that chemotherapy reduced the tumor and later said that everything was free of malignant cells. Treatment side effects included fatigue, nausea, vomiting, menopausal symptoms, joint pain, hot flashes, dizziness, fatty liver disease, and depression. She responded by improving her nutrition, exercising more, and eliminating alcohol. The illness also affected her finances and career because she was not re-employed after treatment began. Over time, Laura became more attentive to her emotions and more patient with herself and others. She described rebuilding her life and reconsidering her personal and career goals, while feeling increasingly optimistic, courageous, hopeful, inspired, and thankful.
