Breast Cancer: Cheryl's Survivor Story

What happened, in summary

Cheryl West was already undergoing extensive treatment for a separate cancer of the hard palate when she received a breast-cancer diagnosis. In 2011, surgeons removed the right side of her hard palate, her maxilla, parts of the eye socket, soft palate, and neck lymph nodes, followed by complex reconstruction using bone and soft tissue from her leg. Radiation for the palate cancer had to be delayed when breast cancer was discovered. Cheryl completed radiation therapy for breast cancer before returning to radiation treatment for her face and neck. She later described herself as cancer free. The remainder of her recovery focused largely on the effects of palate-cancer surgery and reconstruction. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment supported healing, additional procedures improved speech and eating, and a dental prosthesis helped restore her ability to speak clearly and chew. The entire process lasted several years and required sustained support from her family and clinical teams. Cheryl credited her doctors’ patience and guidance with helping her maintain strength and care for her mouth throughout recovery. Her breast treatment became one part of a demanding journey involving two separate primary cancers, prolonged healing, and major functional reconstruction.
