Journey of Resilience
Embracing Life With Stage IV Colorectal Cancer: Patrick’s Journey
How a Sudden Diagnosis Led to Strength, Advocacy, and New Purpose
Patrick’s story begins in June 2017 when he was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer that had already spread to his lungs and liver. For months prior, he experienced persistent stomach pains, weight loss, and more frequent, looser bowel movements. Being slim and rarely ill, Patrick simply did not suspect something so serious.
His GP initially reassured him he likely did not have anything “nasty,” but further consultations and a scheduled colonoscopy pointed to a concerning problem. Unfortunately, before his appointment, the pain became unbearable, leading to multiple A&E visits. It was during the third hospital trip that he finally received a scan, revealing what first appeared to be appendicitis. However, surgeons soon discovered a large, cancerous tumor blocking his colon.
Patrick awoke from surgery to learn he had a stoma and that the cancer might be more extensive than initially thought. Further scans confirmed metastases in his liver and probable lesions in his lungs, making it stage OV. He soon began regular chemotherapy at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. Although side effects were challenging, Patrick found it vital to persevere with treatment for as long as possible.
Despite the shock of his illness and the initial difficulty of accepting his stoma, Patrick gradually returned to enjoying life’s activities. He had to stop working but became deeply involved in blogging, fundraising, and raising awareness about colorectal cancer. He constantly balanced realism with optimism and cherished each day, forging strong connections within the cancer community.
Tragically, Patrick passed away in January 2020. Yet, his story remains a testament to hope, perseverance, and the power of advocacy, reminding all of us to stay vigilant about our health and to find purpose amid life’s most unexpected challenges.
