Journey of Resilience
An Unstoppable Fighting Spirit: Thriving Beyond Stage IV Colorectal Cancer
How a Busy Mother of Eight Turned a Frightening Diagnosis into a Story of Hope
When 45-year-old Lisa D. learned she had stage IV colon cancer in July 2014, she refused to slow down. She was already caring for multiple foster children, parenting eight adopted kids, and running her nonprofit organization, Betty’s Angels. A large, orange-sized tumor in her colon and signs of disease in her abdominal lymph nodes might have seemed insurmountable, but Lisa’s “all in” approach guided every decision she made.
Her medical journey began swiftly: within 10 days of her colonoscopy, Lisa was referred to The University of Kansas Cancer Center. An 8-week course of oral chemotherapy and radiation therapy came first, followed by 6 weeks of rest. Then, Lisa met with colorectal surgeon Dr. John Ashcraft, who coordinated a complex synchronous surgery with another surgical team to remove the tumor, reattach the colon, and perform a full hysterectomy. Undaunted by this major operation, Lisa was hosting Thanksgiving dinner just three weeks later.
Subsequent treatments included two more rounds of intensive chemotherapy, a temporary ileostomy, and another procedure to remove it. By August 2015, her tumor markers had stabilized; however, imaging in January 2016 revealed progression in her abdominal lymph nodes. Medical oncologist Dr. Anup Kasi recommended restarting chemo, and Lisa’s cancer once again responded well. She eventually transitioned to a pill-based maintenance therapy, allowing her to maintain the active lifestyle she treasures.
Lisa’s relentless positivity has impressed her doctors at every turn. In between treatments, she traveled, ran competitively, and even rediscovered her love of art during chemotherapy sessions. She and her family also bought a lakeside home to savor precious moments together. Currently, Lisa is studying to retake her bar exam—just one more challenge she’s determined to conquer.
Reflecting on her care, Lisa remains grateful for the speed, expertise, and compassion shown by her entire medical team. She shares her journey to underscore the importance of prompt screenings, trusting your healthcare providers, and never losing hope—no matter how daunting the diagnosis may appear.
