Journey of Resilience

Conquering Stage IV Colorectal Cancer: An Inspiring Battle and Remarkable Recovery

How One Ontario Father Beat the Odds and Found New Purpose Through Advocacy

Steve, a 51-year-old resident of Ontario, Canada, received a life-altering diagnosis three years ago: Stage IV colorectal cancer. For years, doctors had attributed his ongoing symptoms to food sensitivities. By the time a proper examination was performed, the tumor in his colon had grown so large that the scope could not pass. Worse still, scans showed 23 metastatic tumors on his liver. The prognosis seemed bleak, with specialists telling Steve he might only have three years to live.

Despite feeling terrified and angry, Steve resolved not to let bitterness define him. He underwent emergency surgery to address the blocked portion of his bowel, resulting in the removal of approximately one foot of his colon. After a few weeks of recovery, he began an intensive treatment protocol: 27 rounds of chemotherapy spread out over three years, paired with antibody therapy (panitumumab). Though he suffered grueling side effects—such as widespread, bleeding rashes—he remained steadfast, motivated by his love for his family and his desire to model resilience for his two sons.

Alongside his personal fight, Steve discovered new ways to “fight cancer in the streets.” He participated in fundraising efforts for his local hospital foundation and regional cancer center, determined to make a difference for others facing similar struggles. He also volunteered as a cancer coach at the Colorectal Cancer Resource and Action Network (CCRAN), offering support and hope to patients navigating their own cancer journeys.

Recently, after finally receiving a liver transplant to address his metastatic disease, Steve’s doctors delivered phenomenal news: there was no sign of cancer in his body. Eager to share his experience, Steve now speaks openly about the importance of early detection and the power of positivity, urging others to remain hopeful and proactive no matter their diagnoses.
