Journey of Resilience
An Inspiring Battle Against Stage 4 Gastric Cancer
From a Dire Prognosis to Multiple Remissions, One Woman’s Fight Against an Aggressive Disease
Melissa, a resident of Clarksville, TN, was diagnosed with stage 4b metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma following a long and challenging diagnostic process. Her symptoms began in late 2021 after a mild case of COVID-19, presenting as persistent throat discomfort. Initially, doctors attributed it to acid reflux and anxiety. In September 2022, while vacationing in Mexico, she experienced nausea and vomiting, which she dismissed as a urinary tract infection.
After returning home, her massage therapist noticed something unusual in her back, prompting further evaluation. An ultrasound ordered by her primary care physician revealed gallstones, leading to gallbladder surgery. Although she initially felt better, her nausea returned. An endoscopy later identified a paralyzed stomach and a mass near her esophagus. Biopsies confirmed invasive adenocarcinoma, a devastating diagnosis for Melissa and her family.
In December 2021, she began chemotherapy and two trial immunotherapy drugs. Despite an initial prognosis of less than a year, she responded remarkably well, and by April 2023, her scans showed no evidence of disease. She celebrated by ringing the cancer center’s bell—a milestone of victory.
However, in early 2024, a small cancerous lymph node was detected, leading to resumed chemotherapy and a new immunotherapy drug. The side effects were severe, but she persevered. After several rounds of treatment, another scan showed no evidence of disease. Yet, in August 2024, a PET scan revealed another recurrence, requiring further treatments. She compares her cancer battle to a game of “whack-a-mole.”
Despite the ongoing struggle, Melissa remains resilient, supported by her faith and medical team. She continues her treatment journey with gratitude, embracing each day as a gift.
