Overcoming Stage IV Ovarian Cancer: Nikki’s Life-Changing Second Opinion

How Expert Care, Determination, and Support Led to a One-Year Cancer-Free Milestone

Nikki, a 42-year-old mother of two from Waltham Abbey in Essex, was initially given a devastating prognosis of stage IV ovarian cancer with no treatment options. Mild bloating in late 2019 was wrongly attributed to IBS, and by summer 2020, severe breathlessness signaled something far more serious. Multiple doctor visits led to an X-ray revealing fluid-filled lungs, and tests showed the presence of cancer cells. Nikki was told the cancer had spread throughout her abdomen, womb lining, and lungs, and that nothing could be done.

Undeterred, she contacted her private healthcare insurer and received a referral to Mr. David Lawrence, a Cardiothoracic Consultant at HCA Healthcare UK. He arranged further biopsies, then introduced her to Dr. Mary Mccormack, a Consultant Oncologist at Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC). Despite stage IVa ovarian cancer, the specialists reassured Nikki that treatment was indeed possible. Once fluid was drained from her lungs, no further cancer cells were detected there, giving her renewed hope.

Within a week, Nikki began chemotherapy. After three cycles, the disease was contained, allowing Miss Adeola Olaitan, a Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at The Harley Street Clinic, to perform a successful surgery removing Nikki’s ovaries, fallopian tubes, womb, cervix, and omentum. Further chemo targeted any residual cells, and by January 2021, tests confirmed she was cancer-free.

One year later, Nikki celebrated this significant milestone in January 2022. She credits the swift collaboration and expertise of her entire medical team, especially her Clinical Nurse Specialist Johanna, who provided round-the-clock support. Nikki now advocates for others to seek second opinions if something feels amiss and to never delay appointments. Remaining positive remains central to her outlook; although there is a 75% chance of recurrence, she chooses to focus on living life to the fullest.
