Journey of Resilience

Five Years Beyond Diagnosis: Mike’s Triumph Over Metastatic Prostate Cancer

How One Man Turned Adversity into Hope, Advocacy, and Community Support

Mike, a 66-year-old resident of New Jersey, learned he had stage IV metastatic prostate cancer in 2018. The shock of this incurable diagnosis felt overwhelming at first, especially as a husband, father of two, and soon-to-be grandfather. Yet Mike chose to focus on living instead of statistics, recognizing that numbers did not define his future. He launched into a treatment plan involving hormone therapy, steroids, and other medications. Despite the resulting fatigue, regular gym workouts have helped him regain strength and manage symptoms. “Exercise is my way of managing,” he explains.

During those initial months, the uncertainty weighed heavily on Mike. Determined to fight, he fixed his sights on reaching the one-year milestone. He describes that first year as the hardest, but a critical turning point. Key to his success was emotional support—he found both relief and camaraderie through a men’s support group facilitated by CancerCare. Meeting twice a month, participants shared insights on navigating their diagnoses, regardless of specific cancer type. Those sessions brought Mike comfort and the realization that he was not alone.

As Mike’s energy returned, so did his commitment to making a positive impact. He ramped up participation in cancer awareness initiatives, emphasizing early screenings for prostate cancer. Even with other health challenges, including hip replacements and arthritis, Mike remains resolute in his mission: volunteering with the LIVESTRONG program at his local YMCA, supporting fellow cancer survivors, and training as a peer recovery coach to assist people facing addiction.

Now at the five-year mark, Mike feels immense gratitude. He believes he has more work to do, sharing his story to encourage others with cancer to stay active, seek emotional support, and pursue regular check-ups. In his view, having faith—combined with strong community connections—has provided the momentum to keep living fully every day.
