Journey of Resilience

A Cancer Survivor’s Journey: Overcoming Stage IV Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

A Story of Resilience, Advanced Treatment, and Hope

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and for a 35-year-old woman with no significant family history of cancer, the news of stage IV triple-negative breast cancer was unexpected and overwhelming. Her journey began on December 13, 2022, when an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration confirmed an invasive ductal carcinoma in her right breast. Further tests, including a biopsy of the right axillary lymph node, revealed metastatic breast cancer, setting the stage for an intense and challenging battle ahead.

The Treatment Journey

Her fight against cancer started with weekly chemotherapy using nab-paclitaxel. Encouragingly, the tumor size reduced significantly after just three doses. However, the aggressive treatment led to severe side effects, including pancytopenia, requiring supportive care with transfusions and medications to boost blood cell counts. Further testing confirmed high-grade metastatic carcinoma but did not reveal any targetable genetic mutations.

Despite initial progress, she was re-admitted in late March 2023 for severe liver complications, including hyperbilirubinemia. Salvage chemotherapy with sacituzumab govitecan was initiated, showing initial improvement but ultimately failing to sustain liver function. As a next step, third-line treatment with continuous 5-FU chemotherapy was introduced, leading to a remarkable recovery in liver function.
Radiation therapy to the liver was also administered intermittently to manage metastases. After significant stabilization, she transitioned to oral capecitabine therapy, which she continued following hospital discharge.

The Outcome

Months later, the treatment yielded promising results. Follow-up scans in May and August 2023 showed stable disease, improved liver and spleen size, and no additional cancer progression. Her physical condition remained strong, with normal blood counts and minimal side effects.
Her journey underscores the power of advanced treatment options, perseverance, and the importance of personalized cancer care. Today, she continues to live with cancer but maintains a high quality of life, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope and medical progress prevail.

Diagnosis

Stage IV triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma, confirmed via biopsy and PET/CT scans

Biomarker profile: ER-negative, PR-negative, HER2-negative

Treatment

Initial chemotherapy (nab-paclitaxel), followed by salvage chemotherapy (sacituzumab govitecan), third-line 5-FU, radiation therapy, and ongoing capecitabine maintenance

Outcome

Significant tumor reduction, stabilized liver function, and sustained clinical response with manageable side effects
