Journey of Resilience

From Cough to Cancer-Free: How Advanced Treatment at MD Anderson Saved a Life

A stage III lung cancer diagnosis seemed hopeless — until one patient found new hope

In September 2014, a nagging cough that worsened at night marked the beginning of a life-changing journey. After several months of antibiotics, allergy tests, and specialist visits, a CT scan finally revealed the real cause: stage III non-small cell lung cancer (adenocarcinoma) in the lower lobe of the right lung.

Despite being physically active — lifting weights and practicing yoga — the diagnosis came as a shock. With limited treatment options offered locally and a grim prognosis of just 15 months to live, the patient took matters into their own hands and sought a second opinion at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The difference was immediate. Within hours of the first appointment in July 2015, a detailed treatment plan was in place. The care team, led by surgeon Dr. Stephen Swisher and radiation oncologist Dr. Steven Lin, recommended a combination of surgery and proton therapy. Two days later, Dr. Swisher performed a lobectomy to remove a 3-inch tumor and affected lymph nodes.

Recovery was swift — the patient was walking several miles on a treadmill within a week of returning home. This was followed by seven weeks of highly targeted proton therapy, designed to minimize damage to healthy tissues. Weekly visits with Dr. Lin and close communication with the care team helped provide both medical guidance and emotional support.

Throughout the journey, staying positive and leaning on faith were key. The patient’s service dog, Hans, also offered comfort on tougher days. Five years after treatment, a virtual visit confirmed the best news possible: cancer-free.
