Journey of Resilience
Defying Stage IV Laryngeal Cancer with an unstoppable attitude
How Expert Surgery, Personalized Rehabilitation, and Family Support Transformed an Unexpected Diagnosis
Joshua W., a dedicated union carpenter of 44 years, was on the brink of retirement when a sudden change in his voice and persistent throat issues began troubling him in early 2022. Initially misdiagnosed as an infection, tests eventually confirmed a serious and elusive cancer growing behind his larynx. By the time he reached UC Health, the mass had progressed to stage IV laryngeal cancer.
Under the guidance of Dr. Chad Zender in the Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Department, Joshua underwent a challenging neck surgery one Saturday morning in February. Despite a demanding surgical schedule, Dr. Zender prioritized Joshua’s care, aiming to remove the cancer and preserve as much function as possible. Joshua’s sisters, Nancy and Vanessa, remained steadfast through the several-hour procedure and his subsequent 10-day stay in the ICU.
One pivotal moment occurred when Joshua met a former neck cancer patient. Hearing that a fulfilling, everyday life was still possible changed his outlook entirely. After successful surgery, Joshua embarked on radiation therapy, supported by a multidisciplinary team that included speech pathologist Angela Terese Dionisio. Through hands-on training, Angela helped him adjust to a prosthesis and regain his ability to speak—a crucial step for returning to normal life.
Family involvement played a massive role in Joshua’s well-being. Nancy spoke highly of the UC Health team’s responsiveness, emphasizing how calls for help were met with immediate care. Even after a recent health scare triggered additional biopsies, Dr. Zender’s thorough approach and patient-first attitude reassured the family. Though Joshua retired earlier than planned, he now enjoys fishing and hands-on projects, ultimately relishing a well-deserved life chapter.
